Pianist
Max Arsava studied jazz piano at Hochschule für Musik Würzburg with Bernhard Pichl and at Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar with Achim Kaufmann. He works mainly at the intersections of contemporary music, free jazz and electroacoustic music with a strong interest in DIY, free improvisation, noise rock and other forms of community-oriented experimentalism. Besides piano, he also plays synthesizers and other electroacoustic devices working with tapes, radio, contact microphones, as well as loopers and samplers.
In 2018, he founded the trio werken with Copenhagen-based vocalist Sarah Buchner and bass clarinettist Sebastian Langer from Düsseldorf. Since 2022, he has been working with composer and sound artist Jascha Hagen on the cybernetic extension of the prepared piano. As a pianist and live electronic musician, he plays in Ignaz Schick's workshop ensemble Circuit Training. Further collaborations with Peter Ehwald, Bill Elgart, Alex Bayer, Loren Stillman, Jordan White and many others.
His music has been released on labels such as Aut Records, Jazzwerkstatt, creative sources recordings, KLAENG Records and others. Concerts have led him to Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, France, England, Czech Republic, Denmark and the United States. In 2019 he received the Steinway Jazz Award Frankfurt. Max Arsava organizes the concert series explorations at exploratorium berlin and curates with the collective Neu Berlin Institute of Improvised Music.
In addition to his artistic and curatorial activities, Max Arsava is a committed educator and teaches workshops on contemporary music, improvisation and graphic notation based composition with the project KLANGRADAR all over Germany. As of 2024 he teaches piano improvisation at Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar.
